Chriss Casper – What you see

PRE PRODUCTION
“What you see” is an experimental music video that is designed to take you on a voyage. The voyage of a man seeking his perfect woman, while he hears her asking him back what does he see in her, what does he want from her, what does he aspire to? Considering the beats are extremely chilled and relaxed, I designed the video from concept to finish as a dreamy, out of our world visual experience. Starting from sketches I did and other influences that shaped me as an artist, I wanted to create something unique design-wise and add some flavor to the otherwise classic music video style we are all starting to get used to.
As soon as I pitched my idea for the video, we started scouting for the perfect locations to fit that vision and tried to dream with our eyes open. Drawing the preproduction sketches and driven solely by ambition and the scarce resources we had, I tried envisioning every shot of the concept as a singular frame that you could grab and still be able to use as a poster/photograph. From then on, the storyboard I did reminded us about the plan that we’re following every step of the way.
As a Director my job wasn’t all that hard when shooting day came. Just had to ignore the cold and stick to the plan. But that’s easy to say when you don’t have to wake up at 5 A.M. and still miss the sun shine because it was cloudy that morning. Also, I found out the hard way that you need to get some rest in the previous days otherwise you’ll get sick as I did in the final stages of shooting the music video. Bummer. That’s why good meticulous planning helps, that’s why we managed to get it done

POST PRODUCTION
After a day’s break, I jumped right into post with a child’s enthusiasm. I was eager to see every frame complete, conscious of the fact that I had marked in my sketchbook  a massive list of tasks. One step at a time though. “Problem” was… ideas kept flowing in, so in the same period of time I had to integrate them too. Designing this project was an absolute joy, even though hard work and hours were required throughout the whole process. Obviously enough, following the plan I went primarily with yellow and red as the secondary color.
For the 3D segment I wanted to leave textures out and focus on lines and the sketchy weird world I imagined Casper to float on. I wanted to create something different from the rest of the video, as this part is designed by the singer as a skit with a different message.

Huge thanks to Casper for letting my imagination go wild and for agreeing to my crazy vision of his music video.
Enjoy the journey, because from start to end, “What you see” was a true labor of love.
